Court begins detention hearings in Tinkune case

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu District Court on Tuesday began pretrial detention hearings for the individuals accused in the violent Tinkune protest of March 28, which resulted in the deaths of journalist Suresh Rajak and transport worker Sabin Maharjan.

A total of 50 defendants, including controversial figure Durga Prasai, were presented before the bench of Judge Dhruva Raj Karki.

Statements from the defendants had begun on May 25 and concluded recently, paving the way for the commencement of detention arguments.

Prasai alone faces five serious charges in this case. According to the District Government Attorney’s Office, the charges include treason, criminal unrest, culpable homicide, attempted murder, and organized crime.

The complaint in the case was filed by several high-ranking officers from Kathmandu Valley Police, including Deputy Superintendent of Police Pralhad Karki, Inspectors Wangyal Lama and Pappu Kumar Das, Senior Sub-Inspectors Bishnu Khatiwada and Bijaya Shahi, Sub-Inspector Arjun Setthi, and Senior Head Constable Bishnu Sapkota.

Meanwhile, a separate case related to the looting at Bhatbhateni Supermarket in Koteshwar is also progressing. Eleven individuals accused in that incident will undergo statement recording and detention hearings before the bench of Judge Padmaraj Pandey. They have been charged with criminal unrest.
