Media essential to address climate change impacts: Vice President Yadav

LALITPUR: Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav has emphasized that climate change is the defining crisis of the current generation and highlighted the media’s crucial role in mitigating its impact.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Lomanthang International Media Summit organized by the Nepal Press Union in Lalitpur today, Vice President Yadav stated that media plays a vital role in raising public awareness and preventing climate-related disasters.

“Media should focus on fact-based reporting on climate change to inform the public, guide policymakers, and promote innovative solutions to address climate challenges,” he said.

He added that journalists can spotlight urgent climate issues such as eco-friendly technologies, government interventions, adaptation strategies, green energy, and sustainable development in a way that is accessible to the public. Such efforts, he noted, help counter misinformation and promote media professionalism.

“Press freedom is the backbone of democracy. It is essential for ensuring accountability and transparency,” the Vice President said.

He also warned that misleading information, especially through social media and deepfake technologies, poses serious challenges. “This underscores the urgent need for a strong fact-checking system,” he added.
