National Assembly member calls for reserved proportional electoral seats for women

KATHMANDU: National Assembly member Bishnu Kumari Sapkota has highlighted the importance of reserving proportional electoral constituencies for women to ensure stronger representation in Parliament.

Sapkota argued that while the country’s electoral system may require amendments due to its rising costs, the proportional electoral system enshrined in the Constitution should remain intact.

She highlighted that this system has allowed women, Madhesi, Dalits, and indigenous nationalities to secure seats in Parliament.

Speaking at the National Assembly, Sapkota shared that she has consistently advocated for women’s rights, asserting that violence against women cannot be eradicated unless women are empowered to take leadership roles.

She stressed the importance of carefully implementing constitutional arrangements to address the country’s challenges. However, she also acknowledged the need for amendments to the Constitution to ensure political stability in Nepal.

“Women’s rights should in no way be compromised during constitutional amendments,” Sapkota said.

The lawmaker further called on the government to prioritize good governance, urging both bureaucracy and political leaders to demonstrate honesty and accountability.

In addition, she suggested strengthening the federal system by empowering local governments and reducing their numbers through mergers.
