NA passes Media Council Bill

KATHMANDU: A session of the National Assembly today passed the ‘Media Council Bill-2080 BS’.

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, proposed the meeting to endorse the Bill with report of the Committee for Legislation Management and his proposal was endorsed unanimously.

Prior to this, responding to lawmakers’ concerns over the Bill, the Minister said the Bill which was discussed long in the Committee and endorsed there before tabling at the NA aimed to making the Media Council more autonomous.

The then Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Rekha Sharma, on April 24, 2024 had registered the Bill citing it was for revising and integrating laws relating to the Media Council and it had been presented in the NA on May 26.

It has been stated that the Bill is for making the digital, online and print journalism more decent, accountable and credible.

It seeks to transform the existing Nepal Press Council into the Media Council and develop it as a competent entity to promote the development of free and independent journalism.

The NA shall meet again at 1:15 pm on coming February 16.
