PM Oli briefs President on formation of constitution amendment task force

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) KP Oli met with President Ram Chandra Poudel on Friday afternoon at Sheetal Niwas.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Oli informed President Poudel that he is forming a task force to move forward with the constitutional amendment process.

According to a source, the collaboration between the two ruling parties is focused on advancing the constitutional amendment agenda, and the task force is being formed to facilitate this process.

While PM Oli briefed the President on the formation of the task force, he did not provide specific details, including the names of its members.

Sources from Sheetal Niwas indicated that further information on the task force’s structure was not shared.

Prime Minister Oli was accompanied by Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Chaurasiya, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, and Law Secretary Uday Raj Sapkota during the visit.

The President’s Secretariat stated that the meeting at Sheetal Niwas focused on discussions about the country’s current affairs.

However, officials from Sheetal Niwas did not disclose any specifics about the contents of the Prime Minister’s briefing.

In recent days, there has been speculation about the government’s preparations to introduce an ordinance related to party division.

Meanwhile, differences have emerged between the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML over the constitutional amendment.

Nepali Congress General Secretary Bishwaprakash Sharma and others had raised objections to PM Oli’s remark at the eighth central committee meeting, where he stated that the constitutional amendment would only occur after 2087 BS.

The timing of Oli’s briefing to the President comes amid criticisms of the Nepali Congress party for allegedly undermining the consensus on the issue.
