Annapurna–Dhaulagiri trail emerges as a top choice for trekkers

MYAGDI: A new alternative trekking route linking Myagdi, Kaski, and Parbat districts has come into operation, offering visitors an off-road experience after the traditional Bhurung–Tatopani–Ghodepani–Ulleri–Birethanti–Nayapul section of the Annapurna Circuit became less convenient for trekkers.

The newly promoted trail passes through major tourist destinations including Ghandruk, Landruk, Mohare Danda, Punhill, Ghodepani, Swant, Khopra, Khair Barahi Lake, Baili, and Mulde Viewpoint, and connects to Ghampus via Ulleri in Kaski.

Trekkers say the route, which can be completed in 10 to 15 days, remains untouched by road expansion and provides a pristine walking experience.

Guide Dinesh Kumar Ghimire said the trail offers dramatic Himalayan landscapes, sunrise views, dense forests, wildlife, and an authentic rural lifestyle.

“Its quiet, off-road environment and closeness to Pokhara have made it a favorite among tourists,” he added, noting that he recently guided five British visitors along the route.

Tourism entrepreneurs have branded the path the Dhaulagiri–Annapurna Trail. According to Swant hotelier Bal Bahadur Tilija Pun, around 100 trekkers are currently using the new route each day.

The influx has encouraged locals to return from urban areas to start hotels and restaurants. Swant, at 2,300 meters, has developed as a key rest stop, while Khopra Lake at 3,600 meters is considered the trail’s main attraction.

Baili hotelier Lok Bahadur Purja said the route offers both camping and lodge-based trekking options, but advised travelers to hire guides due to forests, cliffs, and ravines along the way. Rajesh Tilija Pun, chair of Annapurna Rural Municipality-5, said efforts are underway to expand community lodge capacity, upgrade foot trails, promote new destinations, and further develop the route.
