Teachers’ and professors’ unions derecognized; minister warns of action for political involvement

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science and Technology Mahabir Pun has warned teachers, professors, and university employees against engaging in political activities, stating that any such involvement will lead to disciplinary action.

In a notice issued on Sunday, Minister Pun said the ministry had received complaints that organizations such as the Teachers’ Federation and Professors’ Association were increasingly participating in political movements, which he said was undermining the quality of education.

He emphasized that laws governing teachers, professors, and public employees clearly define their duties and ethical conduct. “No professional act allows them to engage in political bargaining or activities,” he said, adding that violations could lead to legal action, including dismissal.

The ministry has also decided to revoke the recognition of teacher and employee unions that are directly or indirectly affiliated with political parties or their sister organizations.

While acknowledging the professional and constitutional rights of educators and employees, the minister urged that such organizations be restructured into non-political, independent, and professional bodies.

Minister Pun further stated that the education sector is regarded as a zone of peace and warned that any activity contradicting this principle would be subject to strict legal action.
