Unseasonal rainfall causes over Rs 2 billion in crop damage in Koshi Province



BIRATNAGAR: Persistent unseasonal rainfall has caused extensive damage to paddy and vegetable crops in Koshi Province, resulting in losses estimated at Rs 2.5 billion, according to the Agriculture Development Directorate in Biratnagar.

The region experienced continuous rainfall during the third week of October, which also damaged 2,000 metric tonnes of vegetables across 200 hectares in Sunsari, valued at around Rs 40 million, said Purnamaya Gurung, the Directorate’s information officer.

Gurung detailed that the incessant rain damaged crops on 4,364 hectares in Jhapa, 3,421 hectares in Morang, 2,851 hectares in Sunsari, 323 hectares in Udayapur, 268 hectares in Ilam, 144 hectares in Panchthar, 120 hectares in Taplejung, 118 hectares in Dhankuta, 157 hectares in Tehrathum, 250 hectares in Bhojpur, 200 hectares in Khotang, 76 hectares in Okhaldhunga, 15 hectares in Solukhumbu, and 125 hectares in Sankhuwasabha.

In total, Koshi Province has 268,765 hectares of land planted with paddy, with unseasonal rains affecting 12,432 hectares of paddy and 200 hectares of vegetable crops.

The estimated losses by district include Rs 781.156 million in Morang, Rs 453.172 million in Sunsari, Rs 46.253 million in Udayapur, Rs 32.141 million in Ilam, Rs 12.217 million in Panchthar, Rs 12.243 million in Taplejung, Rs 13.940 million in Dhankuta, Rs 13.320 million in Tehrathum, Rs 26.492 million in Bhojpur, Rs 16.110 million in Khotang, Rs 6.802 million in Okhaldhunga, Rs 1.466 million in Solukhumbu, and Rs 11.187 million in Sankhuwasabha.
