World Post Day being observed today

KATHMANDU: World Post Day is being observed today in various countries around the globe under the theme “Local Service, Global Reach.”

The day commemorates the founding of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in Bern, Switzerland, on October 9, 1874. It is celebrated each year to highlight the vital role of postal services in everyday life and their contribution to social and economic development.

World Post Day was officially declared in 1969 at the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan. Since then, countries worldwide have marked the occasion annually with events and programs promoting postal services and introducing new products and innovations.

In a message marking the day, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the importance of postal networks in connecting communities.

He noted that postal services play a key role in linking urban and rural areas, stating that postal workers have bridged remote villages and major cities, helping make the world more accessible to all.
