Maoist Centre calls opposition meeting following Gen-Z protests; RSP to boycott

KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Centre) has convened a joint meeting of opposition parties following the deaths of 19 people during Monday’s youth-led Gen-Z protests against the government.

Party chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal “Prachanda” called the meeting for 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Maoist parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar. Leaders said the discussions will focus on the country’s political crisis, the Gen-Z uprising, and a coordinated opposition response.

On Monday evening, the Maoist Centre’s office-bearers meeting declared that those killed in the protests should be recognized as martyrs and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. The party also announced plans to stage anti-government demonstrations across all municipalities.

However, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has declined to participate. RSP spokesperson Manish Jha said the party will not attend the opposition meeting, stressing the need for inward reflection instead. “In this grave and extraordinary situation, our priority is not ritual meetings but meaningful internal deliberations within the party,” he said.

The deaths of 19 protesters, widespread injuries, and escalating public anger have placed mounting pressure on the government, while sharpening the rift between opposition forces over how to respond.
