Heavy rain expected in Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim

KATHMANDU: Monsoon winds are currently affecting Nepal, with the monsoon low-pressure line hovering near its average position, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has said.

According to the Department, the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy across the country this afternoon. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in some hilly areas of Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, as well as other regions.

There is also a possibility of heavy rainfall in one or two places in Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces. Additionally, light to moderate rain and snowfall may occur in some high hill and mountainous areas.

Tonight, similar conditions are expected, with partial to general cloud cover across the country. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely in some hilly parts of Koshi, Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, as well as scattered parts of other regions.

Heavy rain is also forecast in one or two locations in Koshi, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim provinces. Snowfall may continue in high-altitude regions.

The department has urged the public to remain cautious, citing increased risks of floods, landslides, and mudslides due to potential heavy rainfall. There is also a warning of possible inundation in urban and lowland Terai areas.

Given the potential for rising water levels in rivers and streams—both large and small—the department has advised that daily life, agriculture, health services, tourism, roadways, and air travel in flood-prone areas may be affected. It has called on local residents and relevant agencies to take necessary precautions and prepare accordingly.
