Floods wash away four bridges in Upper Mustang, damage two more

MUSTANG: Flash floods triggered by continuous rainfall damaged six bridges in Upper Mustang on Tuesday evening, according to the District Police Office, Mustang.

The Chumjung River in Chhoser, Lomanthang Rural Municipality–4—a village near the Nepal-China border—remained flooded for around three hours.

The flood damaged two concrete motorable bridges: one over the Chumjung River in Lomanthang–4 and another under construction in Samjung, Lomanthang–2. In addition, a steel bridge and three wooden bridges in the area were also swept away.

Mustang Deputy Superintendent of Police Tshiring Kippa Lama said that residents of a hotel situated mid-river and two houses in Nyamdo village—about 400 meters from the river in Lomanthang–4—were evacuated to safety. Fortunately, no casualties or livestock losses were reported.

While flood levels have receded, a nine-member security team led by a police assistant inspector from the Area Police Office, Chhoser, and an armed police inspector from the Armed Police Force (BOP) Nechung, has been deployed to the area for precautionary measures.

Authorities have warned of lingering risks and urged local residents to remain vigilant as the threat has not yet been fully eliminated.
