KATHMANDU: Lawmakers in the House of Representatives (HoR) have urged the government to remain alert to the growing tension between India and Pakistan and its potential impact on Nepal, particularly regarding the safety of Nepalis living and working in those countries.
Speaking during Zero Hour of Friday’s HoR session, MPs Sher Bahadur Kunwar, Shishir Khanal, Bina Jaisawal, and Saraswoti Bajimaya called on the government to prioritize border security and the protection of Nepali nationals in India and Pakistan.
They also stressed the urgent need to rescue Nepali students currently in Pakistan amidst the escalating regional tensions.
MP Shanti Shrestha highlighted the need for a separate budget allocation to ensure accessible public infrastructure for persons with disabilities. Similarly, Shiva Nepali emphasized timely preparations to mitigate potential risks posed by the upcoming monsoon season.
Shobha Gyawali, Shankar Bhandari, Saraswoti Bajimaya, and Ahamad Farooqi called on the government to focus on the promotion of the agricultural sector.
They demanded guaranteed access to essential supplies such as seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation, as well as measures to boost local-level production.
Dr. Swarnim Wagle urged the government to address unresolved issues at Nepal’s borders with both India and China.
Meanwhile, MP Sarita Bhusal called for sufficient funding in the upcoming fiscal year’s budget for the completion of the Bhutaha–Ambas–Dumkibas road.
Describing it as a vital alternative to the Daunne section of the East-West Highway, she noted the road’s potential to enhance connectivity between Gandaki and Lumbini provinces and to serve as a tourism route.
MP Sitakumari Rana drew attention to the poor implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which Nepal has ratified.
She said government investment in children remains inadequate and urged that the upcoming budget be made child-friendly to meet national and international commitments.
