Nepal at high risk of disasters: Agriculture Minister

KATHMANDU: Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Ramnath Adhikari, has said that Nepal faces a high risk of various natural disasters.

Speaking at a regional ministerial-level meeting on the Integrated Early Warning and Early Action System held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Minister Adhikari noted that Nepal’s geographical location makes it particularly vulnerable to multiple types of disasters.

He stated that the country experiences significant loss of infrastructure and economic damage every year due to floods, droughts, cold waves, lightning, and glacial lake outburst floods.

On the occasion, Adhikari emphasized the importance of building a common understanding and fostering cooperation among nations to enhance climate resilience and establish effective early warning systems, according to the Minister’s Secretariat.

The meeting was jointly organized by the Government of Sri Lanka and the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (RIMES). It focused on risk assessment, early warning mechanisms, and coordinated preparedness efforts among African and Asian nations.
