KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has stated that the time has not yet come to present ordinances for a vote in Parliament.
Speaking to journalists at the Parliament building in New Baneshwor on Sunday, he remarked that the ordinances issued by President Ram Chandra Poudel in December are still effective, but their presentation in the House is not imminent.
The government had issued six ordinances before the winter session of Parliament, and parliamentary rules require them to be tabled once the session begins.
However, the government withdrew them from the agenda at the last minute in the previous meeting.
While the ruling coalition holds a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives, the numerical composition of the National Assembly poses a challenge in passing the ordinances.
The Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Nepal, led by Upendra Yadav, has yet to decide its stance, creating uncertainty for the government.
Yadav has reportedly demanded the position of Deputy Prime Minister with either the Home or Health Ministry in the federal government, along with the Chief Minister post in Madhesh Province, in exchange for his party’s support on the ordinances.
With Congress and UML yet to finalize a decision, Yadav continues to leverage his position in negotiations.
If the ordinances are rejected, it could bring a moral crisis for the Congress-UML alliance in government, prompting both parties to intensify their efforts to persuade Yadav.
