Prime Minister Oli rejects “People’s War” day label, stresses importance of Democracy Day

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has expressed concerns over some individuals referring to violence as “People’s War” Day, emphasizing that such a label undermines the significance of Democracy Day.

Speaking at a meeting to discuss this year’s Democracy Day celebrations, PM Oli urged the nation to commemorate the historic occasion with grandeur, highlighting the importance of acknowledging the struggle for democracy and rejecting attempts to distort its meaning.

The Prime Minister also announced plans for a series of events, including Diwali celebrations, to mark the day of national importance.

Prime Minister Oli urged the people to commemorate this historic day, remembering the Nepali people’s victory over the autocratic regime and regression, which had oppressed the people and demonstrated disregard for their rights, through their dedicated and sacrificial struggle.

He emphasized that “this day should not be celebrated as a formal occasion based solely on orders from above. Instead, preparations should be made to turn it into a people’s celebration.”

The Democracy Day Main Celebration Committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Oli.

Additionally, a subcommittee has been formed to manage publicity, stage decoration, the ground procession, exercise management, cultural tableau coordination, and the exhibition of cultural diversity, with the participation of relevant bodies and parties.

It has also been decided that provincial-level celebration committees will be formed under the chairmanship of the Chief Ministers in all seven provinces to organize various programs.

Democracy Day is celebrated every year on Nepali date Falgun 7, commemorating the historic day when democracy was established on Falgun 7, 2007 BS.
