Flood and landslide damage prompts Rs 3.78 billion in insurance claims

KATHMANDU: Insurance companies have received claims worth Rs 3.78 billion for damages caused by the floods and landslides in October, according to the Insurance Board (Beema Samiti).

Continuous rainfall between October 3 and 5 led to widespread property losses across several districts. The authority reported receiving a total of 434 insurance claim applications related to the disaster.

Of these, 382 claims were filed under property insurance, 92 under engineering and contractor risk, 209 under agriculture and crop insurance, 37 under private motor insurance, 10 under public motor insurance, three under marine insurance, and one under other insurance categories.

Altogether, 37 districts have reported insurance claims for flood-related damage. Sunsari recorded the highest number with 197 claims, followed by Morang (90), Kathmandu (80), Parsa (71), Ilam (60), Rautahat (28), and Jhapa (20).

In addition, the authority said that insurance claims worth Rs 23.23 billion were filed for damages resulting from the protests on September 8 and 9, while Rs 985.9 million in claims were submitted for losses caused by floods and landslides in June.

The Board noted that with the increase in natural disasters and social unrest, the number of insurance claims filed with companies has risen sharply. Currently, Nepal has 14 non-life insurance companies and four life insurance companies operating across the country.
