KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba reached Baluwatar on Monday to meet Prime Minister and UML Chair KP Sharma Oli while the cabinet meeting was underway.
The meeting between the two leaders comes as the Congress-UML coalition government faces mounting criticism from the opposition.
According to a member of the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, discussions are expected to take place after the cabinet meeting. “The talks may include reopening social media and other matters, possibly even who will replace the Home Minister,” the official said.
Following the violent incidents during the Gen Z protests, Deuba had also convened an emergency meeting of party officials before heading to Baluwatar, where the cabinet session began.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, representing Congress in the coalition, has already submitted his resignation. During the cabinet meeting, Deuba reportedly urged Oli over the phone to restore access to social media, but Oli declined, saying the matter could only be decided by the cabinet.
A member of Oli’s secretariat added that while Prime Minister Oli is unlikely to resign, the Home Minister’s post will be filled by a new appointee.
