Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigns, taking moral responsibility for protest deaths

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has resigned from his post, taking moral responsibility for the deaths that occurred during violent protests on Monday.

A minister present at the meeting said Lekhak tendered his resignation to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during the evening cabinet meeting.

Monday’s demonstrations by Gen-Z protesters turned violent, leaving at least 19 people dead so far. Lekhak said he could not continue in office after such a tragedy, citing moral grounds for stepping down.

Earlier in the day, he had informed his party colleagues that he would not remain in his position on ethical grounds.
