KATHMANDU: The main opposition party, Maoist Centre, has demanded the resignation of Prime Minister (PM) KP Sharma Oli, accusing the government of committing genocide in its handling of the Gen-Z protests.
An informal meeting of top Maoist leaders, including Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, held in Gorkha today concluded that the Prime Minister must step down immediately in light of the recent violence.
Maoist leaders condemned the government’s actions during the Gen-Z movement, calling them unacceptable. They stated that the situation has escalated to a point where Prime Minister Oli’s resignation is necessary to restore order and accountability.
So far, at least 15 people have died during the Genji protests. In response to the incident, Maoist leaders announced the suspension of their campaign activities and their immediate return to Kathmandu.
Maoist leader Madhav Sapkota stated that all senior leaders are halting their Mid-Hill campaign and heading back to the capital.
“The government opened fire. This was not just murder — it was a massacre,” said MP Sapkota, summarizing the sentiments of party leaders. “They were first negligent, and then they resorted to live fire. It was deliberate.”
According to Sapkota, the party leadership agrees that Prime Minister Oli should resign and help create an environment conducive to dialogue and peace.
