Students struggle to return home as protests disrupt Kathmandu Valley

KATHMANDU: The Gen-Z protests in Kathmandu Valley on Monday created difficulties for students returning home from school.

As the demonstrations disrupted security and movement in several areas, schools had to use alternative routes to send students home by bus. Some schools, however, decided to keep students on campus until the situation eased.

The Private and Boarding Schools’ Organization Nepal (PABSON) issued directives to ensure student safety, asking schools either to arrange safe transport or to provide food and shelter within school premises.

PABSON chair Krishna Prasad Adhikari said schools had been instructed to keep students safe inside if they could not return home, while also managing meals and basic needs. College students stranded due to the protests were advised to remain on campus as well.

Anju Bhattarai, executive director of Akshara School, said students in safe areas were sent home on time, but those from curfew-imposed or protest-hit zones were being sheltered at school. The Kathmandu District Administration Office has imposed curfews in several parts of the city following the escalation of the Gen-Z demonstrations.
