Indra Bahadur Baniya to seek vote of confidence on August 12

KATHMANDU: Indra Bahadur Baniya, appointed as the sixth Chief Minister of Bagmati Province on August 5, is set to seek a vote of confidence on August 12.

This move follows the provisions of Article 168(4) of the Constitution of Nepal and Rule 143(1) of the Provincial Assembly Rules, 2017.

Ram Kumar Paudel, Secretary of the Provincial Assembly, informed that Speaker Bhuvan Kumar Pathak has called a provincial assembly session for 4 PM on August 12, where Baniya will present the proposal to obtain the vote of confidence.

According to the constitutional mandate, the Chief Minister must obtain a vote of confidence within 30 days of appointment.

To remain in office, Baniya must secure the support of at least 56 provincial assembly members in the vote of confidence. Following a successful ballot, sources close to Baniya say he plans to expand his cabinet.

Baniya had already inducted six UML and two Nepali Congress members as ministers on August 5. He is expected to appoint six more ministers from his own Nepali Congress party.
