Flash flood hits Upper Mustang’s Chumjung, downstream settlements on alert

KATHMANDU: A massive flash flood carrying mud and debris surged from the highlands above Chumjung village in Lomanthang Rural Municipality-4 on Tuesday evening, prompting authorities to issue an urgent alert to downstream settlements along the Kali Gandaki River.

According to Lomanthang Rural Municipality Chairperson Tasi Narbu Gurung, the flood began around 5 PM and has already swept away more than four temporary bridges and culverts within the municipality.

“A huge flood with heavy mud is coming down from the highlands above Chumjung village,” Gurung said. “We’re closely monitoring the situation, but the risk of severe damage is rising.”

Local officials have notified security forces and administration about the rapidly worsening conditions. Gurung said authorities have been contacting residents and communities in the lower Mustang areas, especially those along the Kali Gandaki riverbanks, urging them to remain vigilant and move to safety if necessary.

Chumjung village is located near the Nepal–China border, and officials say this kind of flood originating from the high-altitude terrain is both sudden and dangerous.

No human casualties have been reported so far, but concerns remain high as the situation continues to develop. Local authorities are expected to conduct assessments and issue further updates as necessary.
