Rasuwa floods: Home Ministry calls emergency meeting

KATHMANDU: The Home Ministry has called an emergency meeting following severe flooding in Rasuwagadhi, Rasuwa, which has caused extensive damage to property and left 18 people missing.

According to the Ministry, a joint meeting of the Central Security Committee and the Executive Committee of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority is being held today to discuss the incident.

The meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Home Ministry, as confirmed by the Home Minister’s Secretariat.

According to Rasuwa Police, 18 people—including three police personnel—went missing after a flood struck the Bhotekoshi River in Gosainkunda Rural Municipality-2, Rasuwagadhi, around 3 a.m. on Tuesday. The flood was triggered by heavy rainfall in the bordering Chinese region. Search and rescue efforts are currently underway.

The flood also swept away the Miteri Bridge, which connects Nepal and China, resulting in the suspension of cross-border traffic since 4 a.m. on Tuesday.

In addition, 7 to 8 vehicles were washed away at an EV charging station in Gosainkunda-2. The flood also damaged the yard of the Rasuwa Customs Office and the dam of the Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Project, according to police.

Among those missing are Assistant Inspector of Police Lal Bahadur Shrestha from the Timure Area Police Office, Police Constable Munna Thakur, and Police Constable Lokendra Bohara, who had been deployed for rescue operations.

The missing include three police officers, nine Nepali citizens, and six Chinese nationals. While the identities of the missing police officers have been confirmed, the names of the nine Nepali and six Chinese citizens have not yet been released at the time of this report.
