Downstream settlements at risk as raging flood hits Trishuli

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a serious warning that the flood originating from Tibet and entering Nepal through the Bhotekoshi River could impact areas as far downstream as the Budhigandaki confluence in Benighat.

Following intense rainfall in the Tibet region, a massive surge of water entered Nepal through the Bhotekoshi River early Tuesday morning.

According to the department’s Bhotekoshi-Syafrubesi monitoring station, the floodwaters were recorded at around 3:30 AM in Rasuwa and had reached Betrabati in Trishuli by 5 AM.

The water level at Betrabati rose sharply—by approximately 2.5 meters—before starting to decline gradually. However, officials have cautioned that the situation remains dynamic, and further rainfall or upstream activity could increase risks.

Based on current flow patterns, the flood is expected to affect several settlements along the Trishuli River corridor, particularly those near the Budhigandaki confluence in Benighat, which lies on the border of Dhading and Gorkha districts. These low-lying areas are now under high alert.

The department’s Flood Forecasting Division is continuously monitoring the situation and assessing the causes behind the sudden flood surge.

Emergency response teams have been placed on standby, and rescue efforts are ongoing in upstream regions like Rasuwa, which has already reported significant infrastructural damage.

Authorities have requested residents along the riverbanks not to return to homes close to the water until the threat subsides.
