Eleven people reportedly missing in Rasuwa floods

RASUWA: Eleven people have been reported missing after being swept away by flash floods in the Lhede River in Rasuwa.

According to Dhruba Prasad Adhikari, Assistant Chief District Officer of Rasuwa, a sudden flood early this morning caused extensive damage in the Timure area, including the Rasuwagadhi Customs zone.

A sudden flash flood in the Lhede River in Rasuwa early this morning has caused extensive damage in the Timure area of the Rasuwagadhi Customs zone, near the Nepal-China border.

The flood, which occurred around 3 a.m., swept away the Miteri Bridge connecting Nepal and China, according to Hem Bahadur Shahi, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) at the District Police Office, Rasuwa.

Several vehicles parked at the Rasuwa dry port and customs yard—including electric vehicles (EVs)—were also washed away. Goods awaiting customs clearance have been swept downstream.

“We have received information that some individuals may have been swept away,” DSP Shahi said, adding, “Search operations are ongoing, but the full extent of the damage has yet to be confirmed. However, it is significant.”

The cause of the flash flood is still under investigation. Police suspect that heavy rainfall in the Tibetan region may have triggered the surge, but the exact reason remains unclear.

Authorities said that some people are still stranded in the flood-affected areas near the river. Businesspeople from the Sindhupalchowk area, who were in the customs zone at the time, are also reported to be stranded.

Rescue and relief efforts are underway, as officials assess the damage and continue the search for missing individuals.
