Parliament session stalled again as opposition continues protest, rescheduled for Monday

KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives meeting scheduled for Sunday was once again disrupted by the opposition alliance, including the CPN (Maoist Centre), leading to its postponement until 2 PM on Monday.

Despite multiple reschedulings—initially called for 1 PM, then shifted to 3:15 PM, and later to 5:30 PM—the session finally convened briefly at 6:30 PM, only to be adjourned shortly thereafter by Speaker Devraj Ghimire due to continued obstruction.

The opposition has been demanding the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak over the controversial visit visa scandal, and has vowed to maintain the blockade until he steps down. The ruling coalition, however, remains firm in its support of the Home Minister, resulting in a deadlock and the lack of a working agenda for Sunday’s meeting.

Although reports suggested the ruling and opposition parties were nearing a consensus earlier in the day, the deadlock persisted.

Leaders from the Nepali Congress, including Vice President Purna Bahadur Khadka, General Secretary Gagan Thapa, and MP Gyanendra Bahadur Karki, held discussions with representatives from Rastriya Swatantra Party—including Vice Chair Dr. Swarnim Wagle, MPs Biraj Bhakta Shrestha and Santosh Pariyar—as well as Unified Socialist MP Rajendra Pandey.

Despite efforts, the discussions failed to produce a breakthrough, and the obstruction in Parliament remains unresolved.
