Speaker’s talks with major party whips fail to resolve House deadlock



KATHMANDU: Discussions led by Speaker Devraj Ghimire with the chief whips of the three major parties on ending the ongoing obstruction in Parliament ended inconclusively on Sunday.

The Speaker held talks at Singha Durbar with Nepali Congress Chief Whip Shyam Kumar Ghimire, CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Kumar Bartaula, and Maoist Centre Chief Whip Hitraj Pandey.

During the meeting, both the ruling parties and the main opposition reiterated their firm stances.

UML Chief Whip Bartaula and Nepali Congress Chief Whip Ghimire maintained that they could not accept the opposition’s demand for the resignation of Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak or the formation of a parliamentary probe committee.

In response, Maoist Centre Chief Whip Pandey reiterated the opposition’s position that Home Minister Lamichhane must be investigated for his alleged involvement in the visit visa scandal.

However, he said he would provide further remarks following a meeting of opposition parties later in the day.

Expressing dissatisfaction, Speaker Ghimire said that despite repeated adjournments of the House in hopes of political consensus, no resolution has been reached.

Noting that discussions on the budget have been stalled due to the obstruction, he urged all parties to consider both constitutional boundaries and practical responsibilities.
