Seven arrested for online fraud worth Rs 26.3 million

JANAKPURDHAM: Seven individuals have been arrested in Dhanusha on charges of involvement in a large-scale online fraud operation.

According to Superintendent of Police Narahari Regmi, the suspects allegedly defrauded people by creating fake social media accounts and offering goods such as mobile phones and motorcycles at attractively low prices.

Victims were asked to make advance payments, after which the fraudsters would cut off contact and disappear.

The arrested individuals—ranging in age from 19 to 23—hail from Dhanusha, Sarlahi, Mahottari, and surrounding areas. Police recovered 10 mobile phones used in the fraudulent scheme, and investigations revealed that the group had opened 187 bank and wallet accounts under various names using those phones.

So far, 21 fake social media accounts and pages linked to the fraud have been identified. The suspects are currently in custody under extended remand as investigations continue.
