Maoist Center suspends awareness campaign, blames Oli for Royalist resurgence

KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Center) has decided to suspend its ‘Tarai-Madhes Awareness Campaign,’ claiming that royalist activities have surged due to the actions of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

The campaign, which began on February 25, 2025, has been put on hold, with the party arguing that corruption and other misdeeds by those in power have emboldened royalists unnecessarily.

“Oli has engaged in extremely wrongful activities, and corruption within the government has created room for royalists to resurface,” said Govinda Acharya, Chief Personal Secretary to Maoist Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’.

He added that a party leadership meeting has been called for Sunday (March 09) to discuss the matter, leading to the temporary suspension of campaign events scheduled for the next two days.

Acharya emphasized that the only alternative to the current republican system is regression and hinted at the need for resistance against royalist groups. “The monarchy cannot be an alternative to our republic. Regression is not an option. If necessary, we must resist the royalists,” he stated.

He also noted that while former King Gyanendra Shah was pardoned despite his role in suppressing the 2006 People’s Movement, the party would now strategize in response to his increasing political activities.

“Royalists have been given a pass for too long. Even the former king was forgiven despite his past actions. But now, as he crosses the line, we need to decide our next steps,” Acharya said.

Under the campaign, the Maoist Center had planned programs in Bara on Sunday (March 9), Parsa on Monday (March 10), and Chitwan on Tuesday (March 11).

However, all upcoming events have been put on hold pending further discussions.
