Teachers back on the streets in protest

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Teachers’ Association has staged a demonstration in Kathmandu, marching from Maitighar to Bijulibazar as part of the final event of their first-phase protest.

The Association had aimed to mobilize 36,100 teachers from all 77 districts for today’s demonstration at Maitighar Mandala. To coordinate participation, teachers were divided into groups.

Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur were expected to send 7,500 teachers. Three districts under another group were set to contribute 3,000 teachers, while 29 districts had a target of 17,400. Thirteen districts were expected to send 3,900, nineteen other districts 3,870, and the remaining districts 500 teachers.

The Association instructed each participant to contribute Rs 100, with Rs 50 going to the national committee for protest mobilization.

Since February 2, 2025, the association has been protesting to pressure the government into addressing previous agreements and passing a progressive Education Act.

The first phase of the movement, which continued until March 1, 2025, included various protests at the local, district, provincial, and central levels.

Last year in Sept-Oct 2024, teachers staged a nationwide protest, even sleeping on the streets of Kathmandu.

Following the demonstrations, the government twice agreed to incorporate their demands into the School Education Bill.

However, teachers are now back on the streets, demanding the government fulfill its commitments.
