Forest Minister Thakur meets Indian counterpart Yadav, discusses bilateral cooperation

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Minister for Forest and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri, met with his Indian counterpart, Bhupender Yadav, in New Delhi on Friday.

The meeting took place during Minister Thakuri’s visit to India for the World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS).

According to Minister Shahi’s chief private secretary, Lek Bikram Shahi, the two leaders discussed matters of mutual interest, including biodiversity conservation, air pollution, and environmental cooperation.

Minister Thakuri acknowledged India’s ongoing support for Nepal’s development and emphasized the need for deeper collaboration between the neighboring countries.

A key topic of discussion was the management of red sandalwood, for which Minister Thakuri sought India’s assistance. He also stressed the importance of a joint approach to tackling air pollution, a shared concern for the South Asian region.

Additionally, Minister Thakuri extended an invitation to Minister Yadav to attend the Sagarmatha Sambad, scheduled for May 16-18 in Nepal. The event, themed “Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity,” aims to foster international cooperation on pressing environmental issues.

Senior officials from both nations were present at the meeting. Minister Thakuri, who arrived in New Delhi on March 4 for the WSDS (March 5-7), is set to return to Nepal on March 8.
