National Labour and Employment Conference to begin on March 10

KATHMANDU: The government is set to host a two-day National Labour and Employment Conference in Kathmandu on March 10-11, focusing on strategies to boost domestic employment.

The event will take place under the theme “Expansion of Production and Productivity: Sustainable Foundation for Internal Employment.”

At a press meet on Friday, Minister for Labour, Transport, and Social Security, Dol Prasad Bhandari, stated that the conference aims to gather insights for a strategic action plan under the Domestic Employment Promotion Decade.

Highlighting the challenges of unemployment, he stressed the need for skills development and emphasized that domestic employment should be seen as a viable alternative to foreign employment.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to inaugurate the event, which will bring together around 500 participants, including representatives from all levels of government, the private sector, trade unions, researchers, experts, development partners, and NGOs.

Nepal continues to experience high labor migration due to a lack of adequate job opportunities at home. In the fiscal year 2024-25, a staggering 714,297 Nepali workers obtained labor permits, including renewals, reflecting the growing pressure on foreign employment.

The conference is expected to deliberate on policies and strategies to create sustainable jobs within Nepal, ensuring a more stable and self-reliant workforce.
