With 88 days to polls, EC begins PR process today



KATHMANDU: With the countdown to the March 5, 2026 House of Representatives election accelerating, the Election Commission has begun rolling out key components of the electoral calendar, starting with the Proportional Representation (PR) process today.

Political parties have also stepped up their internal groundwork as the election date approaches. The EC is launching the process for the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system from today (Sunday).

Political parties may submit their applications for the PR system between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The list of parties that apply will be published on December 10.

Parties submitting applications will then be required to register their closed lists on December 28 and 29 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. The final list of PR candidates will be published on February 13, 2026, according to Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai. Under the PR system, 110 of the 275 House seats will be elected.

Under the direct election schedule, candidate nominations will be registered on January 20, with the candidate list published the same day. Complaints against nominations may be filed on January 21, and the updated list will be released on January 22, 2025. Candidates may withdraw on January 23, after which the final list will be published and election symbols assigned.
