Parbat’s Paiyun to provide relief to farmers for damaged paddy crops

PARBAT: Paiyun Rural Municipality, Parbat, plans to distribute Rs. 3 million in relief to farmers whose rice crops were damaged by rain and windstorms last week.

According to Nirbhik Narayan Bhurtel, ward chairman of Paiyun Rural Municipality-5, farmers had requested assistance from the rural municipality and ward office following the recent storms. The executive meeting subsequently decided to provide relief after assessing the damage.

Bhurtel said teams from the rural municipality office were deployed to collect damage details. The team, along with local representatives, surveyed 1,500 ropani of rice fields belonging to 700 families across the municipality. The monitoring report indicates that approximately 450 tons of rice were destroyed.

The executive meeting decided that farmers with at least one ropani of damaged paddy will receive Rs. 2,000, while those with more than one ropani will receive Rs. 1,500 for each additional ropani.

Chief Administrative Officer Jiwan Gaire noted that the final relief amount may vary. “The expenditure will be finalized only after certified data of each family’s affected area is collected. Based on the current assessment, distributing Rs. 1,500 per ropani for 1,500 ropani of damage is expected to cost around Rs. 2.2 million,” he said.

Farmers in Parbat have been worried as the rain during the harvest caused problems such as soaking cut and dried paddy, paddy falling to the ground, and wetting of straw. While standing crops in uncut fields were less affected, strong winds on Monday blew down several crops, causing further losses.

Other local governments in the district, including Kushma Municipality, Phalebas Municipality, and Bihadi, Modi, and Mahashila Rural Municipalities, have also reported that they are in the process of collecting damage details.
