Mustang-Dolpa road blocked for 10 days due to heavy snowfall

MUSTANG: The Mustang-Dolpa road has been blocked for the past 10 days following heavy snowfall.

The Road Division Office, Mustang, had expanded the road from Pakling in Mustang to Dolpa via Sangta village to Chuksamba.

The Road Division Office, Baglung, upgraded the Mustang-Dolpa road and opened a new track to allow residents of Upper Dolpa to travel to Jomsom in Mustang, transport goods, and use a shorter route between Pokhara and Kathmandu compared to the Dolpa headquarters in Dunai.

The road was also expanded to facilitate the transport of goods from Mustang to Upper Dolpa and to bring sheep and yaks to Mustang.

However, the road, which stretches from an altitude of 4,000 meters above sea level, has remained blocked due to the snowfall, said Waragung Muktikshetra-5 Ward Chairman Surendra Gurung.

The blockage has halted the movement of goods and vehicles from Jomsom to Chuksamwa. Ward Chairman Gurung said a request has been made to the Road Division Office, Baglung, to clear the snow and reopen the road.

Additionally, heavy snowfall that occurred a week ago has disrupted electricity, internet, and mobile services in Sangta, a village on the Mustang-Dolpa border, according to Ward Member Chhiringpalsang Gurung.

Last year, 13 households in Sangta were electrified with solar panels installed by the Alternative Energy Promotion Center in coordination with the rural municipality. Residents, who rely on agriculture and animal husbandry, live in the village for eight months during the rainy season and spend the four winter months in Phalyak and Jomsom.
