Govt holding emergency meeting on disaster response



KATHMANDU: The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is meeting today to address the impacts of recent floods and landslides across the country.

The meeting, called by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, is scheduled to take place at 11:30 AM at the Prime Minister’s Office.

According to Dinesh Prasad Bhatta, Executive Chief of NDRRMC, the meeitng will focus on the widespread destruction caused by floods and landslides triggered by the recent heavy rainfall.

The meeting is also scheduled to discuss a total of nine key agendas, which include distributing relief to the families of the deceased and missing persons, resuming blocked roads and essential services, managing potential epidemic outbreaks in the aftermath of the disaster, constructing temporary housing for displaced families, and providing compensation and support in accordance with the law.

The meeting is also expected to formally express its condolences over the loss of lives and property. So far, 60 people have died in the recent disasters, with Ilam District reported as the hardest hit. Physical infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and hydropower projects, has suffered significant damage, with economic losses estimated in the crores.

Senior government officials and stakeholders have been invited to participate in the meeting. These include the Finance Minister, Energy Minister, Home Minister, Industry Minister, Education Minister, Agriculture Minister, and Communications Minister, along with the Chief Ministers of all seven provinces.

In addition, former Minister Dr. Gangalal Tuladhar, the Vice Chairperson of the National Planning Commission, the Chief Secretary, the Chief of Army Staff, and the Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs will also attend as expert members.
