Unseasonal snowfall blankets Khumbu region in early October

SOLUKHUMBU: As autumn ushers in the tourist season in the Everest region, the Khumbu area typically begins to buzz with activity. Mid-October usually marks the peak of trekking and expedition movements along routes from Namche Bazaar to Gokyo, Dingboche, and Phorche.

However, this year, an unusual snowfall in the first week of October has disrupted this rhythm, blanketing the region in white earlier than expected.

Snowfall during early October is considered rare in Khumbu. This unexpected weather event has affected locals, businesses, and expedition teams operating in the region.

Following heavy rainfall that began early Sunday morning, snow accumulated in areas above Namche, particularly within Solukhumbu’s Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality. Local resident Pasang Sherpa reported that continuous rain and snow have covered Dingboche, Lobuche, Pheriche, and Gokyo in a thick layer of snow.

Laxman Adhikari, chairperson of Khumbu Pasanglhamu Rural Municipality–4, stated that snowfall on Sunday led to snow piling up to more than four feet on rooftops in the upper Khumbu region. “The snow in areas above Namche has severely disrupted daily life,” Adhikari said.

According to the District Police Office in Solukhumbu, five hotels in the Dingboche area suffered structural damage due to the weight of the snow.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Manojit Kunwar confirmed, “The roofs of five hotels were damaged due to the heavy snow and continuous rainfall. Thankfully, there have been no human casualties, but the economic losses are significant.”
