PM Oli on social media regulation: Disrespect to the nation cannot be tolerated

PATAN: Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli said that while many issues can be tolerated, any attempt to undermine the nation will not be accepted.

Addressing delegates on the final day of the UML Statute Convention in Godavari, Lalitpur, on Sunday, Oli stressed that the party has always stood against misconduct and any attitude of belittling the country.

“Nationalism is not poetry, not rhythm, and not a matter of short-term interests. We are a force that has sacrificed for freedom of speech and national dignity. The UML is not against social media, but businesses operating in Nepal must comply with the law. Making profits without following legal provisions is unacceptable,” Oli said, criticizing those who he claimed only protest without offering solutions.

He added that so-called intellectuals lack independent thought and have been attempting to influence society in questionable ways. Referring to recent demonstrations, he said some were trying to provoke unrest in the name of the ‘Gen-Z generation,’ but insisted that the new generation cares deeply for the country.

Recalling that the government had already called for the registration of social media platforms a year ago, Oli argued that compliance with national law is more important than individual employment concerns. “Freedom comes from dignity, and dignity ensures sovereignty,” he remarked.

He also reaffirmed his party’s policy to reduce inequality, end discrimination, and advance towards fulfilling its ‘Mission 84’ commitments.
