KATHMANDU: Nepal has exported over Rs 17.5 billion worth of electricity to India and Bangladesh in the fiscal year 2024/25.
According to the Nepal Electricity Authority, Nepal sold approximately Rs 17.19 billion worth of electricity to India and around Rs 266.7 million to Bangladesh.
Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka said the achievement not only boosts export volume but also improves Nepal’s trade balance, as electricity imports from India, which were about Rs 12.92 billion last year, are gradually declining.
Under a tripartite agreement, Nepal currently exports 40 megawatts of electricity to Bangladesh at 6.4 US cents per unit, with scope for further expansion.
Nepal sells electricity competitively in India’s day-ahead and real-time markets, especially during the monsoon season when production peaks.
Daily exports to Indian states now exceed 700 megawatts, transmitted through the 400 kV Dalkebar–Muzaffarpur line and the Baharampur–Bhedamora line at the India-Bangladesh border.
