Nagarik Unmukti Party’s Resham Chaudhary meets PM Oli

KATHMANDU: A day after withdrawing support from the ruling seven-party coalition led by the CPN-UML, Nagarik Unmukti Party patron Reshamlal Chaudhary held a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday afternoon at Baluwatar.

Chaudhary reportedly explained to the Prime Minister the reasons behind his party’s decision to withdraw support from the federal government.

The meeting lasted for around an hour, and comes after Nagarik Unmukti Party formally notified the Speaker of its exit from the government on Sunday.

Following the move, Ranjita Shrestha, Nagarik Unmukti Party’s chairperson, was seen seated on the opposition bench during Monday’s House of Representatives meeting.

The fallout escalated after the Chief Minister of Sudurpaschim Province, Kamal Bahadur Shah, dismissed Nagarik Unmukti Party minister Rameshwar Chaudhary. The dismissal intensified tensions, prompting Nagarik Unmukti Party to sever ties not only at the provincial level but also with the central coalition comprising both Nepali Congress and UML.

With Nagarik Unmukti Party’s exit, the current government’s plan to amend the Constitution has encountered a serious obstacle. Meanwhile, the Janata Samajbadi Party, led by Upendra Yadav, is also reportedly considering leaving the coalition, signaling further instability for Prime Minister Oli’s alliance.

Resham Chaudhary is also expected to meet with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba later in the day, indicating potential new political realignments in the coming days.
