Orange saplings distributed in Khawa to boost commercial farming

BHOJPUR: Orange saplings have been distributed in the agricultural pocket area of Khawa, located in Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality-5, Bhojpur, to promote commercial cultivation.

According to Ward Chairman Sunil Rai, the saplings were distributed under a subsidy program funded by the ward office, which allocated Rs 200,000 for the initiative. The goal is to expand orange farming in Kerabari and Rembuk by supporting farmers engaged in commercial agriculture.

“We are implementing a structured plan to raise farmers’ income and increase production,” said Rai. “Every year, we invest in pocket areas that align with the region’s geography and farming potential.”

Under the program, 1,600 orange saplings were distributed to 36 farmers in the first phase. The saplings were provided on a cost-sharing basis, with 75 percent of the cost covered by the ward and 25 percent by the farmers.

Currently, around 150 farmers in the designated pocket area are involved in orange cultivation. In recent years, the ward has also distributed around 2,000 kiwi saplings in areas such as Majhaule, Cholanti, Khawa Bhanjyang, and Ramite to promote kiwi farming.

Alongside orange and kiwi cultivation, the ward has introduced a range of agricultural support measures, including pest control tools, training programs, medicinal herbs like chiraito and sutawa, and seed distribution.
