Education Minister confident School Education Bill will be passed by June 29

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Raghuji Pant, has expressed confidence that the School Education Bill 2080 will be passed by the House of Representatives by June 29.

Speaking at a consultation program on early childhood development organized by the Federal Parliamentarians’ Coordination Group on Saturday, Minister Pant said that the government is working with urgency to finalize and pass the bill.

“All genuine concerns will be addressed in the Education Bill. We are progressing accordingly, and it will be passed by Asar 15 (June 29),” he said.

Pant shared that the Ministry is working on addressing teachers’ demands, including issues of teacher positions and school mergers. He also assured that past agreements between the government and teachers would be incorporated into the bill as far as possible.

“The law must be revised with time and must reflect the needs of the era,” he said. “Only those demands that are in line with the constitution and economically sustainable will be fulfilled.”

Referring to a prior agreement with teachers, Minister Pant noted, “When the nine-point agreement was signed, I publicly stated it was like cash in hand. That agreement will be implemented starting from Shrawan (July 17).”

He further highlighted the government’s openness to scientifically sound and economically viable suggestions to reform the country’s education system.

“We must be clear on how to include early childhood development within the education system and how to address overall child development through policy,” he said.

Meanwhile, Amar Bahadur Thapa, Chairperson of the House Education, Health, and Information Committee, stressed the need to improve the education system based on clear priorities.
