Gagan Thapa stresses need for responsible politics, warns against provocative rhetoric

DHARAN: Nepali Congress General Secretary Gagan Thapa has called on party leaders and supporters to uphold the party’s long-standing commitment to responsible and principled politics, cautioning against impulsive and emotionally charged rhetoric that could threaten democratic values.

Speaking at the first general convention of the Nepal Democratic Yakthung Limbu Association in Dharan on Friday, Thapa emphasized that the Nepali Congress (NC) does not engage in mob politics or incitement.

“The NC does not believe in mob and incitement,” he said, reiterating that the party has always prioritized peace, stability, and institutional reform over provocation and populism.

He reminded attendees of the crucial role NC played in the promulgation and implementation of Nepal’s constitution, and said the party remains committed to protecting democratic norms through reasoned debate and consensus-building.

“The political foundation of NC is democratic values, debate and consensus. Manipulation of human emotion harms politics and the nation,” Thapa said.

Highlighting the importance of focusing on policy, public mandate, and inclusive discourse, Thapa underscored that democratic governance has played a transformative role in Nepal’s socioeconomic progress. He rejected any possibility of regressive forces returning under the guise of nationalism, declaring firmly, “No regressive force will return in the name of nationalism.”

As the country navigates a challenging political landscape, Thapa urged support for the current two-party coalition government, stressing the need for stability and unity in governance. “It is time to make the two-party government strong,” he said.

Thapa’s remarks come at a time of growing political tension, with competing narratives shaping the national discourse. His speech served as both a defense of democratic values and a warning against political tactics that could destabilize Nepal’s hard-earned progress.
