Bal Mandir land scam: Case filed against 17 individuals



KATHMANDU: The District Government Attorney’s Office in Kathmandu has filed a case against 17 individuals, including Rita Singh, the sister of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Urban Development Prakash Man Singh, in connection with the Bal Mandir land embezzlement case.

The case was registered at the Kathmandu District Court on Wednesday. Initially, the District Government Attorney’s Office had recommended against prosecution and forwarded the file to the Office of the Attorney General. However, the Attorney General later decided to proceed with legal action, leading to the filing of the charge sheet.

Rita Singh, 71, daughter of supreme commander in the democratic movement of 1990, Ganeshman Singh, served as the then-president of the Nepal Children’s Organization.

Others named in the case include former vice president Tulsi Narayan Shrestha, former general secretary Ganesh Bhakta Shrestha, and former members of the Resource and Mobilization Subcommittee Krishna Shankar Sah.

Former authorized general secretaries Shyam Kumar Ale and Subash Kumar Pokharel—who is also a Nepali Congress leader—have also been charged.

Additional defendants include former general secretary Ramkaji Gurung, former vice president Yogendra Bahadur Shahi, former vice treasurer Deepak Das Shrestha, and several individuals affiliated with Brihaspati Vidyasadan School.

These include current and former school owners Prabin Raj Joshi, Murari Nidhi Tiwari, Purushottam Raj Joshi, Shraddha Sanghai, Abhinav Singhaniya, Siddhartha Kedia, and Kirti Prasad Pandey.

They have been accused of defrauding the Nepal Children’s Organization and causing a financial loss equivalent to Rs. 603,977,231.05.

If found guilty under Section 249 of the Penal Code 2074, the accused could face up to seven years in prison and a fine of up to Rs. 70,000.
