Maoist Center calls on public to stand in solidarity with agitating teachers

KATHMANDU: The main opposition party, Maoist Center, has urged the general public to stand in solidarity with the teachers currently protesting in the federal capital, Kathmandu.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Maoists expressed their full support for the teachers’ demands and encouraged the public to join the movement.

The statement, issued by party Vice Chair Agni Prasad Sapkota, who also serves as the spokesperson, called on the government to create an environment where teachers can fulfill their educational responsibilities.

This could be achieved by issuing the School Education Act through a special session or other means. “We urge the general public to support the teachers’ movement and stand in solidarity with their demands,” the statement read.

The Maoists are also calling for the immediate enactment of the School Education Act, based on an agreement between the previous government, led by party chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, and the Nepal Teachers’ Federation.

The statement criticized the government, saying, “It is absurd that the government, which can issue ordinances with significant national implications without hesitation, has ignored the legitimate demands of the protesting teachers for 10 months since its formation.”

“Now, after the teachers’ agitation has intensified, the government plans to pass a bill during the budget session. This reveals the government’s indifference and irresponsibility toward the teachers’ demands,” the statement concluded.
