NC leaders oppose special convention, urge focus on elections and party unity

KATHMANDU: Leaders supporting the regular convention of Nepali Congress have criticized the proposal for a special convention, saying there is no justification for it at a time when the party should focus on strengthening itself and addressing the country’s ongoing challenges.

Speaking at a meeting held in Kathmandu on Thursday, the leaders argued that holding a special convention now is unnecessary and politically motivated. They alleged that the proposal for a special convention emerged after positions were already allocated at the central level.

Uddhav Thapa, chairperson of the Koshi Province chapter of Nepali Congress, stressed that the party should remain united at a time when it risks splitting into two factions. He said the party’s priority should be on ensuring the success of upcoming elections, rather than conducting a special convention. Thapa added that once elections are complete, the party can consolidate itself through a regular convention.

Durlabh Thapa, chairperson of Bhaktapur district, also criticized the party’s general secretary for spreading confusion regarding the convention on social media. He said that the party cannot be prevented from holding a regular convention simply because of external pressure.

The debate over whether to hold a special or regular convention has intensified within the party, with different factions organizing separate meetings to voice their perspectives.

Party leaders said that decisions taken in haste or under pressure could have negative consequences for both the party and the nation. They urged all members to prioritize national interests and party unity over procedural disagreements.
