Despite monsoon withdrawal, rain likely in two provinces

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology’s Weather Forecasting Division has said that although this year’s monsoon has begun withdrawing from western Nepal, rainfall is still likely in Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces.

According to the Division, due to the influence of westerly winds, moderate rainfall is expected today and Tuesday in some hilly, Himalayan, and Tarai areas of these two provinces.

Currently, partly cloudy conditions have been observed in Karnali and Sudurpaschim, with light rain reported in a few locations, the Division said. Light snowfall is also possible in some higher Himalayan areas.

The Division has urged farmers and the tourism sector to remain cautious, as the lingering weather system could affect both agriculture and travel.

This year, the monsoon has begun withdrawing four days later than usual. While monsoon typically retreats from Nepal around October 2, it started doing so only today, according to the Department.

In a statement, the Department said, “The monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of Sudurpaschim and Karnali provinces, the western areas of Lumbini, and some western parts of Gandaki Province.”

Meteorologist Rojan Lamichhane noted that the monsoon often remains active around its withdrawal period. “Usually, monsoon withdrawal starts around October 2, but sometimes it lingers. This year, it has retreated slightly later than the average date,” he said.
