Kojagrat Poornima being observed today

KATHMANDU: Hindus across the country are observing Kojagrat Poornima today, marking the final day of the 15-day-long Bada Dashain festival. The day is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Mahalaxmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity.

The festival formally concludes with Kojagrat Poornima, during which devotees offer evening prayers to Mahalaxmi at home and observe an overnight vigil.

According to religious belief, Goddess Mahalaxmi travels the world on this night to see who is awake and worshipping. Those found observing the vigil are said to receive her blessings.

This day also marks the end of the ritual of giving and receiving Tika and Jamara, which began on Vijaya Dashami. As per tradition, the Jamara—which was sprouted and consecrated at the Dashain Ghar and Kot on the first day of the festival, Ghatasthapana—is ritually disposed of in rivers, ponds, or other sacred places.
