Nepal conducts third kidney transplant on the same patient for the first time

BHAKTAPUR: The Shahid Dharmabhakta National Transplant Center in Bhaktapur has successfully performed a kidney transplant on the same patient for the third time, marking a medical milestone in Nepal.

At a press briefing on Saturday, Executive Director Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha said the rare and highly complex procedure was carried out successfully, setting an example that advanced kidney transplants are now possible within Nepal.

Former Sudurpaschim Province minister Laxmikishor Chaudhary underwent his third kidney transplant on August 24 and was discharged on Saturday. His first transplant was conducted in Lucknow, India, while the second (in 2015) and third procedures were carried out at the national transplant center under Dr. Shrestha’s leadership.

Dr. Shrestha explained that while most transplanted kidneys function for a long time, factors such as immunological rejection, infection, and chronic complications can lead to failure. In such cases, a second transplant may be required, but a third is extremely rare worldwide due to surgical complexity, limited donor availability, and higher risks.

Chaudhary’s latest transplant was conducted under a paired-exchange system involving unrelated donors.

According to the center, Nepal’s first second-time kidney transplant on a patient was also performed under Dr. Shrestha’s leadership at Bir Hospital in 2010. Since its establishment 13 years ago, the transplant center has successfully conducted 1,502 kidney transplants and 35 liver transplants.
